Space is the Place
Sun Ra’s Space is the Place (1974) is probably his most iconic work. Ra recorded hundreds of hours of music and performed around the world. Still, Space stands out for so many because the film, written by him and Joshua Smith, brings together his Afrofuturist worldview seamlessly. With so much attention on Afrofuturism thanks to the new Smithsonian exhibition, I think more people will discover Sun Ra. At their core, Afrofuturist musicians like Ra embody the tendency of speculation and liberation in Afrofuturism through the intersection of performance, lyrics, and technology. You can see all of that on display in this short clip.
